Is there feed in the barn for his horses? If so could you feed his horses HIS hay? As for the mare that is a tough call. You might have to put her back with his and take the loss for feeding her.

Good luck contacting him. I don't think the guy techinically owes you for feeding the horse since you offered to feed it since you were planning on buying it. Your right that is too much money for an 8 yr old unbroke horse. I could see if the guy wants to give it to you, but if he doesn't then he needs to come and get it. He doesn't show much concern for it, but Amish (I think I read he was Amish) they take you for your word too.I'm not being mean just stating facts. It does stink to be out the money for feeding the horse, but it was your choice to feed it not his. He shouldn't be asked to pay for services he didn't ask for. I feel bad for the horses being underfed...and you trying to be nice and do the right thing...it stinks all the way around, but comes with a lesson learned I think. Dont' be mad..I'm not trying to be mean just giving my opinion.

I would just leave it as is with him and contact the animal control and explain that the horse is not yours but the man might claim it is after a misunderstanding. I would contact animal control though, because it is not fair to the horse (and other horses that might be there) to be left alone to starve.
You chose to do the feeding he does not owe you for that. I personally would not accept the horse even if he chooses to give it to you.. Like Taylor said, donate her to a rescue where she can be re-habbed and trained and adopted by a new family.
I also do not recommend going to his home just because you do not know what confrontation might happen. Better safe than sorry..

I would report the horse as abandoned to animal control. I think it is all you can do legally.

I do not think anyone was exceptionally rude. No one is accusing you of starving your horses. You said you did not have the money for this horse, I read that correctly. Whether you have the money or not you do not see the need to justify $600 for an unbroke not well bred horse.. I can totally see where you are coming from.
I do not think any conversation with this guy needs to take place. As soon as you are gone, let animal control know you are leaving this barn with your horses and let them know that you do not believe this horse will be taken care of once you leave. If you feel like you want to talk to him just call him or go to his house (which I do not recommend..) and tell him you wanted to let him know you are taking your horses elsewhere and wanted to be sure he knows that you will not be able to care for his horse anymore.
