Hi,
My vet didn't call it ruptured but torn. She tore her tendon in 3 places 1 inch long. Your recovery time depends on your Ultrasound, how bad it is, how quite your horse is in it's stall and how well you rehad it.
The protocol I had to follow is.: First 3 days ice 24/7 and Banamine. After that sweat for 30 days.....Reultrasound. Than 2 weeks of hand walking w/o a sweat and occational Banamine for pain. No turnout for 90 days at least. This is where we are now.
The vet told me mine would take about 5 months if she dosn't reinjure it. She needed to be kept on firm surfaces. No over bedding the stall. No soft sand arenas and No turn out....due to the odds of reinjuring.
Did you have an Ultrasound yet and if so what did the vet say?
Best Christy

Never ruptured however a suckling foal I had a couple years back severed his rear left deep flexor tendon. That was cleansed, treated, bandaged and securely wrapped and splinted. The foal and dam were kept confined in a 4 foot enclosure. He was given pain and inflammatory medication, the dressing changed as advised by my vet. It took 3 full months to get the tendon re-established and mending (yes it grew back together) Vet said in youngsters that is easier and more likely then in adult animals. Anyways it took 12 weeks before it was mended enough to be left open. But it took 16 weeks for it to entirely heal over and for hair to begin re-growth. Good luck I don't envy you your task. ~Cat~

My horse was diagnosed with a ruptured tendon back in October, the vet that i had look at him specializes in leg injuries so knew that it was a ruptured tendon before i even got him into his barn. He told me to put the horse on stall rest for 3 months and see where he was at, at the 3 month mark the horse appeared fine so i turned him out in an indoor arena and by the end of the week the horse came up lame again, now the vet is telling me that since it hasnt healed its not going to and i need to put him down, i would like a second opinion on this because there was never an ultrasound done. Do you mind telling me what vet you used?
Thanks

Hi, This same thing happened to me. I had my mare on stall rest and put her out in our indoor and in 2 weeks she reinjured her tendon. The vet told me it would set me back about 6 weeks. Keep in mind this was by my own stupidity.....I thought she would be fine because she is not a hot horse. The vet did not tell me to do this. Lesson learned! I use Dr. Rymal of Oakland Equine Center in Milford. (248) 437-0916. I would trailer your horse to him if he can't come out to were you are. In my opinion you can not get any better than Dr. Rymal.....I have used him for the past 25 years on over 12 horses. Never steared me wrong. Never charged me for unnessary (sp.) procedures. I wish you all the best. This is a long recovery process, as I am learning, and you have my support. If you need anything please send me an email and I'll give you my number. One of mine had a torn tendon and they said she would never be anything other than a pasture ornament. We put her on 4 months of stall rest (in a tie stall) just to play it safe. Our vet said she was not to move at all especially on the ice. We would bring all of her water in and everything. We also would massage her leg nightly and then put on MSM gel and then wrap it with a polo wrap for support. Even after we got the all clear from her ultrasound, we were told to leave the polo wrap on for another month until she built up the muscles. It was such a pain in the neck, but she is as good as new.

I do have somewhat of an update, I called the vet that you gave me information on and they said they would do an ultrasound but if he needed an operation of any sort they wouldnt be able to help me, so i called Michigan State and spoke with one of their vets who was very positive about my horses situation so even though its probably going to cost me a fortune i am going to take him there in two weeks. I will update as soon as they diagnose him. Thanks for all the information you have provided me, it has helped me give him another chance

Hi,
I am glad you are going to take him to State for a second opinion. I should of mentioned them but I always think of my vet first I guess.
My friend took her NSH to States lameness center and they did a full work up on her.....over $1000 just to diagnose. Unfortunitly nothing could be done to fix her so the buck stopped there.
Wishing you all the best. Please keep us up on any new info.
Best Christy
