IMO Yes. I hate having to join a board just to see the posts and decide whether I like it there or not. This way people can view it, decide to join if they like it or move on if they don't.

I agree with Brooke. I'd much rather see if its worth joining, before registering. Now if there becomes problems with it you can always change it back. Like we had considered on MSN/MEL in the beginning.

I don't see the point in hiding it. If people found it interesting they'd join, if not they'd go away.

One good point to hide it is people who like to go around and copy what people say to use against them or post on other boards... If its hidden and they have to join to see it , and they do something we can ban them.... if the board is open no way to stop it. I understand what you all are saying about just opening it, but there are reasons to keep it members only too.

I think you should leave it the way it is. For reasons you stated AND if it's open they never have to join, they can just post as "guest" and cause all the trouble they want, or spam the board w/ porn trash or whatever. Just my .02

Is the point of the forum to exchange horse related information or to be a private discussion? I thought it was for horse related info and I'm an adult and can leave the other stuff alone, letting others do as they wish. Who cares if they copy the info to another board, it's not like this is protected speech or anything. We're mostly anonymous people interacting. There's no actual MEL club and this is just an entity owned and managed by that club (maybe I'm wrong, is there? - like the MTRA has a forum and I could see keeping that restricted to members even though they let anyone post). I could certainly see restricting the ability to post to people that joined, but why keep people from reading the posts before joining?

That is a good idea, I think I'll do that w/ mine make it open to view but you have to join to post. If that's possible, consider it done. Anyone who'd like to visit w/o joining, come on over and check it out. Great idea Bleve.

Thanks, I'd rather be remembered for that I think, at least it's better than my Manure Pile idea which seems to have proliferated across boards! See, I don't care if it's copied

bleve - what do you mean about the manure pile idea? MEL has had a debate type board sine 2005.
and as far as the name My hubby came up with that after i asked him to come up with a better name for the board, so it was not copied from you or anyone since he is only on one board and that is MEL. he has not been on or seen any other board you may have been on . HE also renamed the general board as his idea. Sorry if you think it was taken from your idea.

The 'Manure Pile' on my forum is called the 'Herd Gone Wild'. lol Everyone is able to view my forum, Michigan Horse Chat as well. There's a lot of information on there as well as the upcoming 2nd Annual Ladies Camping Weekend! Over 20 people coming already! Should be lots of fun again this year!! We're ordering t-shirts with our usernames on them as well.

See my reply #13 which was made before this board was in existence. Maybe you had something on MSN but I never saw it.

It was in a post on my board, where I think we were talking about what to add, I'm sure it's still there, but it would take some searching to bring it up. I thought it was a great idea, so we went w/ it. It probably got posted on MEL somewhere when there was a catfight between SA and I and maybe he saw it then. Maybe he came up w/ it all on his own. It doesn't matter to me one way or other and bleve is fine w/ it, so I guess it's no big deal. I don't feel the need to get my knickers in a twist over what's the same on one board or another( I sometimes find it entertaining tho). I have no qualms posting links that are helpful between boards. There are folks on my board that aren't members here, or other boards I visit. If I think something is going to help someone out, I will definitely share it. It's the internet, stuff gets copied and pasted all the time, nothing to get upset about.

mihorsecommunity.proboards57.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=1126&page=1There's the thread I linked above. Like I said, see reply #13 near the bottom of page one. And I'm sorry if this board was in existence (just trying to forestall a possible argument), but I'm sure it only had about three different sections. I think this just goes to show that there aren't really that many original ideas out there so why get troubled by copying and pasting.
