My filly has decided to develop a stubborn streak. Sometimes when we're working on trotting (for Halter class) or sometimes just trying to put her back into her pen with her pasture mates, she'll plant her feet and refuse to move. The other day it took me 15 minutes to get her back into her pen. She would back up nicely, but not move forward. Any tips on getting her to move forward?

I would recommend circles. As soon as she does it, do a few tight circles each direction with her then ask her to step forward immediately without giving her a stop break.
I have worked with a lot of young horses and I always took this as trying to show me who is boss. If you have a round pen available, round pen work is wonderful way to help with this. I had an OTTB who would do this, except with me on his back! When he did it, I would put him in the round pen and work with him until he was doing everything exactly how he should, then I would get back on and try again. Most times one trip to the round pen did it.

Circle or carry a dressage whip. My coming two year old will run you over now due to circling, so I carry a dressage whip and rub the lash over her side when she wants to stop.

My mini does this occasionally. Even a dressage whip wont get him moving. Sometimes hell actually have such a tantrum hell go down lay flat and still and his eyes will even glaze over. Hes crazy! I just pull his head to the side where he actuall has to move his feet and I keep going back and forth with each side until he realizes he has to move no matter what and its easier to move straight the way I want him to go instead being pulled side to side.
