I recently "acquired" two female goats around 4 years old. I know they were previously fed a mixed grass hay and a 12% equine feed, same as the horses. Now should I be worried that this is not a balanced diet for them? I have never owned goats before but when I looked up feeding on websites, this diet, seemed fairly well except for maybe the need of a mineral/salt block. Any suggestions?

The horse feed and the hay sound fine as long as they are not pregnant. If they are they should have second cutting hay and as the pregnancy progresses the protein in the grain should be upped to 16%. TM salt block with selenium should be available at all times. Feed goats grass hay or a mix, a horse type feed is ok for them, goats need more selenium than other animals so loose selenium salt is a good thing along with a white block. They will lick the white and not touch the loose for a little bit then they will seem to eat a lot of the loose salt. I also used to provide dical mineral for my dairy goats. The way I did it was to put the white block in a tub and then the loose salt on one side and the dical in the other side.
