My filly has had a massive body itch ever since she had winter hair. She leaves scratches on herself from itching with her teeth. Now she's rubbing her hair off of her neck on the trees. When she gets a bath, i make sure all the shampoo is out and I covered her with MTG the other day. Doesn't seem to be helping. Anyone ever have this problem and how did you treat it?

Cowgirl, can you actually see lice on a horse when they have it? My mare has rubbed the hair off of the top of her tail. I have had a fecal done and it is negative, I treated her with Strongid anyway because they say that kills pin worms, I have scrubbed her butt, teats and everything else but she seems miserable. Any thoughts, don't know what else to do for her? Thanks

My friend had a horse that had the "body itch" I'll have to get with her unless she sees this post and tells you what she did for the mare or what exactly it was, I'm pretty sure it was lice. This mare rubbed herself on anything she could find, you felt so sorry for her.

I checked her mane really well and didn't see a single bug or anything that might look like lice. I think I may try medicated shampoo. Cowgirl.. Did you check with your friend to see what she did?

there are 2 different types of lice, the nasty little brownish ones that are real easy to see, bite enough that they leave open sores AND the flat white flaky looking type that only suck blood, look like dandruff... treat both by bathing in Permectin shampoo (flea & tick shampoo or by adding permectin fly spray to a cirtonalla based shampoo - about 1 oz concentrate to a 32 oz bottle) , allow to dry, dust with permectin lice powder & worm with Ivermectin wormer - ivermectin kills all blood sucking lice. keep treating with lice dust powder for a couple weeks. Spray the stall walls & loafing shed walls iwth permectin fly sprays, wash sheets & blankets with some permectin & hot water...
Tail itching... worm with Safeguard or Pancur, then mix 1 part yellow original Listerine with 1 part Mineral Oil in a squeeze bottle, shake & squirt on tail starting at the dock, drench the tail bone - do that everyday for 3-5 days, then wash with iodine shampoo or Tea Tree oil shampoo. There is a fugus that can live in the hair olicals of the tail, it makes horses completely miserable - you can call a vet & get some expensive shampoos, cortisone, etc, but honestly this works just dandy. It must be the yello listerine, if you go with a generic be sure it's the exact ingredient list.
Yellow listerine is also used to treat rain rot and ring worm at full strength. We pack it for horse shows & mix with an equal amount of water, hang a bucket of it at the tack room door & dip all bits before the horses are bitted, then dip all bits before they are repacked in the trailer - listerine kills all kinds of nasty viruses and you just never know what's floating around a horse show barn. Also use it as a rinse for cleaning football helmets & pads, ringworm runs rampet in locker rooms.
