Anyone have their mare ultra sounded this year? I'm in LeRoy 49655 moving to Hersey (reed city) still 49655 but further south. Anyway, I've got a mini mare I need to have checked to see if she settled and was wondering if anyone happened to know the cost for this area or close to it. Also did you have to haul in or did they bring the machine with them? Even if you don't live near me what did you pay for the whole visit?
Thanks!

Down here the U/S is $35-45. Then you would have the farm call on top of that. Lots of vets wont U/S mini's, so be sure to tell them that's what she is. Most will want to sedate her if they do do it, so that may add another $10-20 too.
Any vet that I would let ultrasound my horse would own a portable machine, but it might be easier and cheaper to haul her in to thier place (you are more likely to find a good mini vet if you can haul her there).

Our vet charges $35 for an ultrasound if he has to tranquilize it's $20 more but he's had a lot of success with a slight muscle relaxant for $6. Good Luck

Wouldn't it be easiest to U/S a mini rather than palpate? I was told most vets wont Palpate so I figured a u/s would be the way to go but to be honest this is my first mini mare pregnancy so I'm trying to learn as much as possible as soon as possible! Thanks for the info!!

Good Luck That sounds like a good price..just judging by other vet costs for different things..lol I can make the appt. now for anytime after this week. I am trying super hard not to get my hopes up but she did not settle last year and I found a home I just could not pass up for my stallion, the sire.

You have to ultrasound them rectally until they are about 7 months along (and even then most vets dont have a strong enough U/S to do it thru the belly very well). So even though you aren't "palpating" them, you still have to get your hand in to control the ultrasound (most mini's CAN'T be palpated because the vet can't move thier hand around enough to feel the fetus, but they can get in far enough to pass the U/S and see it on the screen).
Some vets have an attachement to pass the ultrasound probe on a mini (esp. if they do a lot of llama/alpaca work) without using thier hand, but a woman with a smaller hand can do a 28-30" without too much trouble.
