I have Photoshop 7 and lemme tell you there are a ton of tutorials out there on the internet I have learned a lot from. I barely know how to use it still though. Check online for free tutorials on everything from basics to advanced uses. Good luck, its addicting.

Elements is pretty advanced if it has even a third of Photoshop's features.
If you really want to be able to use it to do professional looking work, I'd look into a community college class. It's not an easy program to self-teach. There are good textbooks you can get at a used book store if you're near a college campus.
