anyone else hearing rumors again of the camp closing or the DNR building a new camp and shutting down the old one? Am seeing this on the MTRA board and trying to decide how accurate it is since there have been rumors of it for many years. We know the fisherman don't like the horses crossing the river but while I support the MTRA the posts on the site disturb me a little as they propose leaving the current camp for just MTRA usage (because they put in the well and such) yeah but they use the camp a couple times a year and I know for a fact we are up there a half dozen times a summer I don't think any group or individual has a right to think of it as theirs exclusively. Heck Tim's folks helped with the camp and cut some of the trees for the original sites way back when and when he was a kid they went almost every weekend from spring to fall.. and rode 100's of miles (all uphill and barefoot if you ask tim and his brother...kids never appreciate the opportunities their parents provide, LOL). Shall we age him they say his mom went back to camping and carried him in a pouch in front of her and he is lets just say his early 40's working on mid 40's now. And his parents were riding there before he was ever thoght of, so just a couple years ago is all But whatever on whomever thinks or wants to think the camp is theirs isn't really the issue. Am just wondering if this is back to rumor or if there is truth to it as I can't seem to find anything on it anywhere else.

I have heard the same.Read the Mtra Feb 09 newsletter on their site and the President's letter.Looks like it may be 2010 when the DNR plans to do this.Sad indeed but the Dnr have for yrs wanted horses away from the river.Seems the fisherman have more say then the horse people huh???I really think there will be more camps and trails closed to horses in the future. Some of the camps have also raised camping prices too high in my opinion...costs of fuel alone limits my camping. Thanks Jan, found it ) What a shame to lose that camp and at a time like this to have the goverment spending the $ to put in new ones. Doesn't seem cost effective. Course neither does the nice people who come in every day to check the bathrooms even during the week when we were the only rigg in camp. (they would come through, then the DNR would come through and even had a nice chat with a county officer who stopped to visit and see the horses he wanted to know what kind of horse Bella was, LOL). Maybe when they are thinking a few cutbacks cutting down to checking in every couple days would be a thought, I dunno there has to be ways for them to cut their costs without cutting out all the camps.

OMG, this is very sad news.. My horse club & family has been going there for at least 30 yrs, I grew up camping there a week out of every year. I love that camp and the river is the main reason we like it.... If someone has the link to the article could you post it? Thanks so much!

www.mtra.orgGo to the forum and there is some discussions on it..also when you get to the forum at the top you can click on the Feb 09 Newsletter. Yes, very sad...I love this camp and we live about 45 minutes from it.Many memories and pictures of the camp and the river. You can bet when they move the camp it will be out in the sand and jack pines...no creek or river.Gotta wonder about the 'powers that be' and if they even know what a horse is let alone setting up a horse camp. Not much up there north of 612 but the pines/sand. Definitely a shame. My issue with the discussion on the MTRA board it they seem to be focused on keeping the camp just for their rides. Now we have been members and never done one of the rides, don't ever plan to, so if they are just pushing for camps to be open just for use during their organized rides a few time a year, well I have an issue with renewing membership since it doesn't represent the interest of the riders like us (and many other members of the organization are like us) who don't do the big rides each year. Always liked being a part of it but perhaps is time to think of spending the membership money with one of the other new groups forming that maybe are looking to keep the trail use for everyone not just a few organized rides each year. But I also realize this is a few members speaking not the organization so will wait to see what comes of it before skipping ship.

So what can be done? Is any one or group trying to fight DNR on this?? It's just a shame...that camp has not changed in all these years....where is the proof that horses are hurting the river or fish in the river??

This group is working on all of the trails as I understand it and we will be going to the meeting at Jays Sporting Goods in Clare to check them out more. Have limited dollars to spend in memberships to the various horse organization so while we usually go with MTRA every year at the stallion expo looks like we will be joining this group instead since it seems to more accurately represent what we are looking for in an organization. Nothing against the MTRA just we aren't looking to do the shore to shore rides and that seems to be the focus that I am seeing of late, and right now I think we need to have a broader focus or will have nothing to focus on. www.bchmi.org/
