If you use lime on your pastures in the spring, yu will have less weeds, even during drought conditions. Makesthe soil ph to a level weeds don't do well in but grasses do.
Another tip I have found was to get a "quick compost" for the garden for those that can't wait a year for manure piles to self compost. Usea 55 gallon metal drum with a lid, place manure in drum and add some household scraps such as coffee grounds, fruit peels, etc. and just about 3 gallons of water. Put the lid back on and tip the drum on its side and roll it about 20 foot then tip it back on end. Leave it in the sun. Everyday roll it that 20 feet. This mixes the compost and "aerates" it. In two weeks you will have manure that is ready to add to soil with rototiller. If you need manure for after plants are in the garden, leave it in the drum for a month and just add it where needed. Of course, the best compost is manure that has sat for a year or even two, but this lets you quickly get it into the garden and not worry about the freshness of the manure killing plants.
