Thank you everyone. This has been a very hard day. My husband is out digging the hole by hand, well shovel. He won't wait a day to see if we can find a backhoe. I guess that is his way of grieving. Ali and I are ok. She will surely be missed.
I am almost positive she died from epm. It was so aweful watching her die. If anyone wants to know details, email me and I'll relpy tmr from work.
How long do you think my other mare needs for closure? We covered Bon with a tarp and Molly went crazy til we uncovered her head. Molly still stands by close to her, protecting her.
I will save some tail hair for sure.
Thanks again.

Again Jennie I am so sorry When I lost my mare November 2007 she was actually in the pasture alone but the neighbors pasture goes right up to our fenceline. All of the neighbors horses stood at the fenceline for a week or so and even after that they would still always come looking for her. Animals are much smarter than some people give them credit for. Don't be surprised if your other mare shows signs of depression.. just spend lots of time with her the next few weeks.

So sorry for your loss As for closure, if you leave Bonnie with the other mare for a little while, she will understand what is happening. When my gelding Lucky passed, we let the others stay with him for the day, and they were okay when it was time to take him.

Oh, I'm so sorry! I don't know how long it will take for the mourning process. It seems that it's different for each of them. When we had our mare put down, we had the gelding present and after it was done we let him in with her. He smelled around her for a while and that was that...

I am so sorry.........it's so difficult to say goodbye to our best friends.......I just read this poem late last night.........now it seems I found it and read it, just for you.....
Somewhere in time's own space There must be some sweet pastured place Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow Some paradise where horses go, For by the love that guides my pen I know great horses live again. ~Stanley Harrison
