A fly or poll apron on your horses ears and forehead??? I admit I used to think they looked ridiculous, but ya know this new BS Paint mare I acquired is very very thin skinned about flies and gnats in her ears and around her eyes. I think part of it is a learned thing since her previous owner was afraid of her (why I don't know she is a sweet mare) but she got in the habit of shaking her head during the ride probably assuming then she would get put up. Well I fixed that I broke down and bought a fly apron and by golly ya know as wacky as they look it still works GRRRREEEEEAAAAT!!!!! I just soaked her rest of the way with fly repellent and made sure to coat her udder with swat and not so much as a wriggle out of her about bugs. It was soooooooo nice. I highly recommend them for everyone. Not so much as a gnat could bother her ears. let alone those confounded deer flies that are like fighter jets zooming in biting on the breeze by. I am going to fix mine with velcro though to hold them to the poll portion of the halter or bridle so they don't have to have that silly crocheted string to tie them on around the throat latch.
Anyways as always curious how many folks use them or any who have wondered about them I can tall you from a previously skeptical point of view YEP THEY WORK!!! ~Cat~

I use the little crocheted ones while riding - even when i had my drafts they had their own. The only problem I've ever found is some horses don't like the way they hang low so toss more to get it out of their way - on those - we've cut the long fringes off and been pretty happy.

I have the crochet ones, I have a Cashel riding mask, I have the fly b gone leg bands and neck band. I have a fly whisk. quarter fly sheet for covering the rump on the trail. Fly leg wraps and sheet are great for the picket line as is the fly b gone leg bands.
I like them all. use whatever one that fits the occasion.
My Mom was going to crochet the ear bonnets but she said that the string and her time and the material for the ears would cost more than what I was paying from the Country Supply catalog.
