My mule will go into big water but will not step in a puddle. I think puddles look to much like holes in the ground to equine.

Put on your rubber boots and play in the water with her, make it fun!!! Make a huge puddle in your yard, if you can, and just stand in it with her walk in and out of it as many times as you can, and remember have fun and do not get mad!!!! Once you have done it on the ground a few times ride her through it. Good luck...If you have excess to a lake, take her swimming!!!

I call my Spirit the puddle jumper. LOL Will go through long wide fields of water, swim in lakes over his head but jump a 1 foot wide trench or little puddle. Can't figure it out either. I will NOT let him refuse because once on a trail ride we were running down a narrow path and he swerved to go around a tiny puddle and almost threw me. So I will take the time no matter how long it takes to get him through it. Good luck, be patient and don't let him refuse or it will be a permanent problem. Magicwoman has a great idea. That's what I would do also. Make sure you are not apprehensive, expecting the balk. Do NOT get mad. If she takes one step in the water reward her and end it there. You could always float a few treats in a Frisbee to make him get a reward for going in. My mare is deathly afraid of grocery bags so I put a few treats in it and make her take them out herself. It seems like I have to do this once a year because her fear comes back over the winter. Horses have such weird phobias. You just have to figure out how to overcome it. I just recently had a problem with Spirit refusing a ditch with water. Three times he refused then I tried one more time and out jumped a deer. So it wasn't the water after all.
